Steps to prevent pipes freezing

- Open under-sink cabinets. This allows warm air to circulate and keep them warm.
- Let your faucets drip slowly. This can help reduce freezing.
- Insulate exposed pipes. Piping insulation, rags, or bubble wrap will all help.
Items to have on hand in case of an emergency
- Cell phone, portable charger, and extra batteries
- Items to stay warm such as extra hats, coats, mittens, and blankets
- Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Water and snack food
- First aid kit with any necessary medications and a pocket knife
If a pipe freezes and breaks
- Turn off the water in the home to prevent additional damage.
- Contact your homeowners insurance provider. Your insurance carrier can open a claim, and provide access to water mitigation services and emergency plumbing repair contractors.
